Yukon Farmers Get Less Than One Percent

We’ve been working with the Yukon Agricultural Association over the past few months on a project that highlights a problem most people don’t know exists.

Farmers in the Yukon work year-round to grow fresh, local food for their communities. Despite their role in building food security in the North, they receive almost no support from their government.

Right now, less than one percent of the territorial government’s food spending goes to Yukon farmers.

One percent.

That means local producers get overlooked in favor of imports. It’s a missed opportunity to strengthen the local economy, reduce reliance on outside supply chains, and give northern communities access to healthy, local food.

The work we’re doing with YAA is about changing that. Creating awareness. Building momentum. Supporting the farmers who feed the Yukon.

These aren’t hobbyists. They’re professionals building businesses in one of the hardest climates imaginable. They deserve better than one percent.

If Canada is serious about food security, it starts with supporting the people who grow food here.

Not importing it from thousands of miles away while local farmers struggle.
